What are the main beryl varieties?
Gem-quality beryl is grouped into variety names largely by color and accepted gem-trade usage. The best-known members are green emerald, blue to greenish-blue aquamarine and pink to peach morganite. Yellow material may be called heliodor or yellow beryl, colorless material is goshenite, and saturated red material is red beryl.
These names do not make every specimen interchangeable. Inclusions, fractures, color distribution, cut, treatment and documentation can change how a stone performs in jewelry and how confidently a seller's claims can be evaluated.

How beryl varieties differ in jewelry
Beryl is commonly listed at 7.5–8 on the Mohs hardness scale, but hardness measures scratch resistance rather than resistance to chipping or breakage. A heavily included or fracture-filled emerald may need more cautious wear and cleaning than a relatively clean aquamarine. Setting protection, stone condition and treatment matter alongside the mineral name.
Avoid assuming that every beryl can tolerate ultrasonic or steam cleaning. Use mild soap, lukewarm water and a soft brush when the treatment history is unknown, and follow any care instructions supplied with a documented stone.

How to buy a beryl gemstone
- Confirm the exact variety name. Broad labels such as “beryl” do not communicate color variety, treatment or quality.
- Request treatment disclosure. The relevant question differs by variety, especially for emerald, aquamarine and morganite.
- Inspect condition and setting. Look for surface-reaching fractures, vulnerable corners and protection appropriate to the intended wear.
- Separate origin from appearance. Color and inclusions seen in a photograph cannot establish geographic origin.
- Use independent documentation when stakes are high. A recognized gemological report can address identity and detectable treatments, but it is not a retail appraisal.
