Five silicate gemstone groups to know
Garnet: color beyond classic red
Garnet is a mineral group rather than one stone. Familiar red varieties share the family with orange spessartine and green grossular or demantoid. Garnet is January's traditional birthstone, while associations with passion and protection belong to cultural traditions.
Tourmaline: the rainbow family
Tourmaline's complex chemistry supports an unusually broad palette. Some crystals show distinct color zones; “watermelon tourmaline” is the trade name for pink centers bordered by green. Color zoning is natural in some stones, but identity and treatment still require seller disclosure or testing.
Topaz: hard, brilliant, and cleavage-sensitive
Topaz reaches 8 on the Mohs scale and can show strong brilliance when well cut. Much blue topaz in the market is produced by irradiation followed by heat treatment. Its perfect cleavage makes impact protection more important than the hardness number alone suggests.
Jade: valued for toughness and carving

Quartz: accessible variety
Quartz includes amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, smoky quartz, and rock crystal. Color may come from trace elements, irradiation, inclusions, or combinations of these factors. Quartz is abundant and accessible overall, although exceptional specimens can command higher prices.
Why the metal setting matters
A gemstone can outlast a poorly designed or worn setting. Prong thickness, stone protection, workmanship, and maintenance matter as much as the metal name.
