What is charoite?
Charoite has chemical formula (K,Sr,Ba)₁₅(Ca,Na)₃₂Si₇₀O₁₆₀(OH,F)₄₀·nH₂O (complex). Mohs hardness: 5–6. Density: approximately 2.54–2.78 g/cm³. Refractive index: 1.55–1.56.
What gives it its color?
Manganese produces swirling purple, white, and black patterns. Found only in one location worldwide.
Where does it come from?
Major sources include Russia (Siberia, Chara River — exclusively).
Treatments and how to spot them
Generally untreated. Found only along the Chara River in Siberia. Distinctive swirling purple patterns.

With hardness 5–6, charoite can be used in various jewelry types. Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners unless the stone is known to be fracture-free. Store separately from harder gemstones.
Note: Prolonged strong light or high heat may cause some color-sensitive or treated stones to fade. Brief daily wear does not usually cause immediate fading, but avoid leaving jewelry in direct sun for extended periods.
