Can Moonstone Go in Water?
Disclosure: This page contains no affiliate links at this time. We only add recommendations after verifying material claims.
A brief, gentle wipe with a slightly damp cloth is different from soaking a moonstone ring, showering in it, swimming in it, or cleaning an unknown setting. Treat prolonged water exposure as a risk, especially when the stone has cracks, treatments, glue, or layered construction.
Short answer
Do not treat moonstone jewelry as suitable for unrestricted water exposure. For routine cleaning, wipe the surface gently, keep water away from vulnerable joins where possible, and dry the piece promptly. If you do not know how the stone is set or whether it is treated, choose the least aggressive method.
Why the jewelry matters as much as the stone
Moonstone is a feldspar mineral. Its surface can scratch and it can chip or split when struck. A ring also includes metal, prongs, glue in some designs, and possibly other stones. Water, soap residue, pool chemicals, and heat can affect a finished piece differently from an unset mineral specimen.
A conservative cleaning routine
- Remove the jewelry before bathing, swimming, chores, or exercise.
- Use a clean, soft cloth that is only slightly damp if surface cleaning is needed.
- Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaning without professional confirmation for that exact piece.
- Pat dry and store separately from harder jewelry that can scratch it.
When to ask a jeweler
Ask before cleaning when you see a crack, loose setting, cloudy area, layered construction, repair, or uncertain treatment. The same caution applies to inherited or expensive pieces. Professional advice is more useful than an internet rule when the construction is unknown.
