Feldspar Gemstones Explained: Moonstone, Labradorite, Sunstone, and Amazonite
Feldspar is a mineral group, not a single gemstone. Moonstone, labradorite, sunstone, and amazonite all belong to the feldspar family, but they differ in composition, optical effects, color, trade terminology, and buying risks. What makes a mineral a feldspar?

Some stones are valued for copper-colored glitter, while others are transparent yellow, orange, red, green, or multicolored with little obvious sparkle.
Because the name covers more than one feldspar context, ask whether the seller identifies the material as oligoclase, labradorite, or another feldspar; whether color or clarity treatment is disclosed; and whether origin claims have documentation. Amazonite: blue-green microcline
Amazonite is the green to blue-green gem variety of microcline, a potassium feldspar. It is usually opaque to translucent and may show white streaks, mottling, or grid-like patterns. Its appeal comes mainly from body color and pattern rather than a moving optical flash.
Color is only a starting clue. Dyed stone, glass, and other blue-green materials can resemble amazonite in photographs. Ask for the material identity, treatment disclosure, dimensions, condition, and return terms. - Request the exact material name. “Feldspar,” “moonstone,” or “sunstone” may be too broad for a high-value purchase.

- View movement, not one angle. Rotate moonstone, labradorite, and sunstone under diffuse and directional light.
- Inspect vulnerable areas. Look for chips, surface-reaching fractures, damaged drill holes, and thin cabochon edges.
