Gemstone Hardness Explained: What the Mohs Scale Means for Your Jewelry

The Mohs scale ranks a mineral's resistance to scratching from 1 to 10. A higher number usually means a polished surface is less easily scratched, but it does not tell you whether a gem will chip, split, abrade at facet edges, tolerate heat, or survive chemicals. Use hardness as one part of a jewelry decision—not as a complete durability score.

Short answer

For frequently worn rings, gems around Mohs 7 or higher are often easier to maintain because common grit can include quartz. That is a practical guideline, not a guarantee: diamonds can chip, topaz has easy cleavage, and softer stones can still work in rings when the setting and wearing habits protect them. Earrings and pendants generally expose gems to fewer knocks and scratches than rings or bracelets.

What the Mohs scale actually measures

Friedrich Mohs introduced the familiar ten-mineral reference scale in the early nineteenth century. A material higher on the scale can scratch a lower-ranked reference material under suitable conditions. The scale is ordinal and relative, not linear, so the numerical gaps do not represent equal increases in absolute hardness.

Hardness is not toughness, cleavage, or stability

  • Hardness is resistance to scratching.
  • Toughness is resistance to breaking, chipping, or cracking.
  • Cleavage describes directions along which a mineral may split more easily.
  • Stability concerns reactions to heat, light, chemicals, moisture, or sudden temperature change.

Diamond illustrates the difference: it leads the Mohs scale yet can chip along vulnerable directions. Topaz is hard but has pronounced cleavage. Jade is lower in hardness than corundum but is valued for toughness. A useful wear recommendation considers all of these properties plus the finished piece.

Ranges are approximate. Gem varieties, aggregates, composites, coatings, fracture filling, surface-reaching inclusions, and assembled pieces can behave differently from an untreated textbook specimen.

Is “Mohs 7 or higher” required for an everyday ring?

No single cutoff determines whether a ring is suitable. The common “rule of 7” is a helpful shopping shortcut because environmental grit may contain quartz, which can scratch softer surfaces when trapped and rubbed under pressure. It does not mean every sub-7 gem will quickly turn cloudy or every 7-plus gem will stay pristine for decades.

For an engagement ring or another piece worn most days, compare hardness with toughness, cleavage, treatment, setting height, edge exposure, replacement difficulty, and your routine. Someone who removes a ring for work, exercise, cleaning, and sleep can reasonably consider more options than someone who wears it continuously.

A bezel or partial bezel can shield vulnerable edges better than an exposed high setting, but no setting makes a soft or cleavage-prone stone indestructible. Prongs also need periodic inspection. How to reduce scratches and chips

  1. Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or divided box. A harder gem can scratch a softer neighbor.
  2. Remove rings and bracelets before lifting, sports, gardening, cleaning, or other impact-heavy work.
  3. Keep jewelry away from abrasive powders and do not test hardness by scratching the piece.
  4. Clean according to the gem, treatment, and setting—not the Mohs number alone.
  5. Have loose stones, worn prongs, chips, and surface-reaching fractures inspected before continued wear.

If a polished gem is already scratched, a qualified lapidary may be able to repolish or recut it. Feasibility depends on scratch depth, stone value, treatments, cut, setting, and how much material can be removed safely.

Frequently asked questions

Can a diamond break even though it is Mohs 10?

Yes. Mohs 10 describes exceptional scratch resistance, not immunity to chipping or fracture. A hard blow at a vulnerable edge or direction can damage a diamond.

Does a higher Mohs number always mean a better jewelry stone?

No. Color, cut, toughness, cleavage, stability, treatment, setting, and expected wear all matter. A softer gem can be an excellent earring or pendant stone, while a hard gem with cleavage may still need impact protection.

Can household dust scratch gemstones?

Some grit can contain quartz or other hard particles. Scratching is more likely when grit is trapped and rubbed against a softer surface under pressure, which is why gentle rinsing and nonabrasive cleaning are preferable to dry scrubbing.

Can a scratched gemstone be repaired?

Sometimes. A lapidary may repolish or recut certain stones, but the process removes material and may alter facet proportions or require resetting. Treatments, thin areas, deep damage, and low replacement cost can make repair impractical.

Is glass durable enough for jewelry?

Many glasses are around Mohs 5 to 6, though composition varies. Glass can work well in earrings and pendants, but exposed daily-wear rings are more likely to show scratches or chips.
